Hyde Park Theatre 2020-21 Writers Group

Welcome to the playwrights selected for our 2020-2021 Hyde Park Theatre Writers Group:

The group meets biweekly over the course of twelve months to read and respond to each other’s work, with each playwright developing one new play. Playwrights will receive a public reading of their play developed in the group in July through September 2021.

Katie Bender (she/her/hers) is a playwright, performer, and theatre maker. Her plays The Alamo, Howling Gallery, The Fault, Still Now and Instructions for a Seance grapple with American myths, revel in female bonds, and delight in physical exertion on stage. Katie’s work has been developed and produced around the country at places like The Alley, Hyde Park Theater, Kitchen Dog, Icicle Creek and ZACH as well as The New Harmony Project, The Orchard Project, Shrewd Productions, The Hangar, EST, The Playwrights’ Center and UCSB Launch Pad. She has her M.F.A. from The University of Texas and is a 2016/2017 Jerome Fellow and current Affiliated Writer at The Playwrights’ Center.

Raul Garza is a Latinx playwright who has drawn acclaim for telling stories that resound with authenticity and sense of place. He boldly explores the intersection of popular culture and cultural identity, and incorporates music, spirituality, and the power of nostalgia into works that span time and location.

J. Isabel Salazar holds a MFA in Writing for Performance from CalArts and has worked with Latino New Play Festival,OSF, Eugene O'Neil Theatre Center and The Orchard Project. She work has been performed at The Fringe Festival in Edinburgh and Frontera Festival in Austin, TX.

Patrick Shaw is an Austin-based playwright, director, and educator. His work's been produced at UT Austin, CMPBS (Austin), The Drilling Company, Galapagos Art Space, Cherry Pit, The Flea, Hudson River Guild, The Motor Company, Gorilla Tango, and Bradley University. He's developed plays at Hyde Park Theater, Last Frontier Theatre Conference, Great Plains Theatre Conference, Sewanee Writers’ Conference, the Millay Colony, Norm’s Fish Camp, and The Plant at Kyle. As a performer, he's collaborated with Underbelly, The Duplicates, Paper Chairs, Bakerloo Theatre Project, and Spessard Dance, among others. He co-directed Rude Mechs' Off Center Teens and currently teaches playwriting and directing at the University of Texas at Austin.

Hyde Park Theatre is located at 511 W. 43rd Street. Covered off-street parking for the patrons of HPT is available during performances in the lot at 4315 Guadalupe Street, just north of The Parlor. You can drive through The Parlor's parking lot to reach it. Evening HPT parking also available at the Hyde Park Church of Christ on the northeast corner of 43rd & Avenue B.
