Update: Joey Hood for a B. Iden Payne Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy.

The first reviews are in for this wickedly funny dark comedy about a young journalist who is high on ambition and low on morals:

"Joey Hood, in a charismatic and confident performance, makes Early watchable and compelling. His ease on stage and spot-on comic timing keeps the audience interested in the hilariously absurd and often vile things coming from his mouth. Hood's energy and commitment never waver. He keeps the audience on the hook."
- Austin American Statesman
"His performance is confident and compelling and effortlessly fresh in all the ways his fans have come to expect. He's fused with the play's narrator, Augustine Early, and gives an engagingly full-bodied portrait of this perversely ambitious, slick, manipulative, and unscrupulous tabloid journalist."
- February 2010 Austin Chronicle profile of Joey Hood
"Hood gives a star-making performance . . . the play is shocking, intelligent, and darkly hilarious . . . Hood and Webster have a hit on their hands, as the packed crowds and nightly standing ovations can tell you."
- Austin Theater Examiner
"[Hood] fully deserves those standing ovations that he is getting every night at the theatre. . . provides a visceral impact and an explosive thrill that no motion picture or cable television show will ever match."
- Austin Live Theatre
Featuring Joey Hood (Killer Joe, Bombs in Your Mouth, The Collection) and directed by HPT Artistic Director and Austin Arts Hall of Fame member Ken Webster (The Pillowman, Dog Sees God). The Boston Globe called this show "viciously funny . . . especially to anyone who cares about the creeping power of tabloid values even in the 'serious' press." Curtain Up called it "a thrilling ride." Atheists, Christians, Jews, and Muslims will all find The Atheist a savagely funny night of theatre.

The show runs at 8:00 PM on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, February 18 - March 13. Every Thursday is Pay What You Can Night; Friday and Saturday tickets are $19 ($17 for students, seniors, and ACOT members). Hyde Park Theatre is located at 511 W. 43rd Street.
